HA NOI (VNS) — Indonesia defeated Viet Nam 7-6 in a penalty shootout to claim the ASEAN Under-19 Football Championships on their home turf yesterday.

Goalkeeper Rafi Mundiato became the match favourite blocking two attempts from the Vietnamese side after another kick from the visitors went wide.

The hosts also missed two chances in the penalty, but it was still enough for them to win the championships for the first time in the nation's history.

It was Mundiato's day as he successfully saved consecutive attacks from the Vietnamese side who won all matches in the lead up to the final.

At the 28 minute mark, Viet Nam's Thanh Tung lodged a ball from the left wing in a straight shot which was diverted by the talented Mundiato.

The star goal keeper continued to frustrate Vietnamese players as he continued another strong defence from an attempt from Nguyen Cong Phuong's 10 minutes later.

Indonesia had several chances to pass Vietnamese keeper Ly Van Truong however they failed to capitalise on opportunities during the 90-minute match and the 30 minutes of extra time.

The victory also helped Indonesia recover their 1-2 loss to Viet Nam during a group round match on September 14.

In a separate match, East Timor overcame Laos 4-2 to take the bronze medal.

In other football news, Viet Nam defeated host Myanmar 3-1 to win a bronze medal at the ASEAN Women's Football Championships which wrapped up yesterday in Yangon City.

Defender Ngoc Anh scored just two minutes into the match from a header to the left corner. Twelve minutes later Thanh Huong scored making it 2-0 for the visitors.

The host narrowed the results at the 36th minute as captain San San Maw headed strongly, beating Vietnamese goalkeeper Dang Thi Kieu Trinh.

Striker Minh Nguyet made it 3-1 for the former champions at the 67th minute which saw a red card given to Myanmar's Moe Moe War. — VNS

HA NOI (VNS)— Viet Nam will leave for Sydney, Australia tomorrow to defend their titles at the Asian Xiangqi (Chinese chess) Individual Championships starting this Sunday.

"Our goal is to maintain our trophies in men's and women's individual events," said coach Hoang Dinh Hong.

"However, this will be a difficult task as our rivals have become more powerful. China will be our toughest opponents." Hong said Ngo Lan Huong was still a title candidate on the women's side but she had to try her best and be careful in making every move because there would be many surprises during the competition.

The coach was not confident about Vietnamese male masters, saying that they only had a 50-50 chance.

"Viet Nam and China equally share the opportunity to win. Things will be up to chance when they face each other. I think that the team with white pieces will have a higher chance of winning," Hong said.

Two of those competing for Viet Nam are national champion Lai Ly Huynh and Minh Nhat, neither of whom competed at last year's championships.

"Last year winner Nguyen Hoang Lam and bronze medallist Bui Duong Tran joined the Asian tourneys, so they could adapt to the difficult situation. Huynh and Nhat are young and lack international experience. But they played best in a July tournament held to select athletes for the Sydney competition. They are at their peak at present and at the same level as Chinese masters," Hong said.

The 16th championships will wrap up on September 27. — VNS

HA NOI (VNS)  — The National Badminton Individual Championships will kick off on Sunday in HCM City.

More than 120 athletes nationwide will compete in men's and women's singles and doubles events for a total of US$8,000 in prize money.

"The tournament is preparation for the National Sport Games next year, so all participating teams have sent their best representatives to Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium," said Le Thanh Sang, General Secretary of the Viet Nam Badminton Federation (VBF).

Included in the women's draw are veteran Nguyen Thi Binh Tho of Thai Binh and Pham Thi Trang from Thanh Hoa, who will both compete in the championships as athletes and coaches.

"Tho and Trang have moved to coaching careers but they will come back and play to make their teams more powerful," Sang said.

According to the official, who is also the federation's deputy chairman, the men's title will be won once again by Nguyen Tien Minh of HCM City, as he is the nation's top player and world seed No 5.

"Unless there is a huge shock, Minh will easily defend his crown. At present he has no worthy rival in the country.

"However there will be aggressive competition for runners up positions."

Sang said Le Thu Huyen, Vu Thi Trang, Nguyen Thuy Linh and Dinh Thi Phuong Hong were the favourites in the women's rounds.

Trang is the tournament's defending champion while Huyen is the national champion.

Linh is a raising star who has graduated from the junior level with honours in every age group she entered.

Hong has recently made such remarkable progress that Sang said the VBF plan to strongly invest in her career.

In singles events, players will take part in a qualification round. Winners will advance to the second stage and meet with wild-cards and seeded players.

The top eight athletes will then enter the next round where they will be divided into two pools, playing in a round-robin format. The best two in each pool will qualify as semi-finalists.

In contrast, the doubles events will apply the knock-out rule from beginning to the end. — VNS

HA NOI (VNS) —The National Athletics Championships saw only one new record on the second day on Monday at HCM City's Thong Nhat Stadium.

Soldier Bui Thi Xuan from the military made a 50.48m throw in the women's javelin event, setting a new national record and earning a gold medal.

The old record of 48.8m was also made by Xuan at last year's HCM City International Athletics Tournament.

In the women's 800m track, the absence of the Asian champion Truong Thanh Hang because of injury gave other young athletes greater opportunity. Do Thi Thao of Ha Noi continued to prove her ability to win with a time of 2min 08.76sec, pocketing her second gold following her first one in the 4x800m relay on Sunday.

In the men's 800m, SEA Games winner Duong Van Thai left his rivals far behind to take the title, clocking 1:50.75.

Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tham of An Giang, replacing her teammate sprint queen Vu Thi Huong, won the women's 100m with 11.96sec. Huong decided to withdraw from her competitive strong point due to not having recovered from injury.

Nguyen Van Huynh from the military took the men's 100m gold medal in a time of 10.65sec.

Olympian Duong Thi Viet Anh of Bac Lieu made a disappointing performance finishing only second in the women's high jump event.

Anh who met no difficulty flying over 1.85m in height at the Mekong Delta's Sport Games earlier this month could only achieve the same after her third attempt at Thong Nhat Stadium.

Meanwhile, key rival Pham Thi Diem from Ben Tre Province, favoured to be the gold medallist, jumped over 1,85m in her first try.
